Goal: The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is offering a competition specifically for middle school students, challenging each of you to create a memorial. In honor of Holocaust Memorial Day, you are going to become a web designer and create an in-depth memorial using Capzles. Use the information you have gathered throughout the semester in your social studies, art, music, and English classes, and create a meaningful memorial to commemorate the lives of individuals lost during the Holocaust.
Role: You will act as a web designer and create a Holocaust memorial using Capzles. As a web designer, you want to be sure that your website stands out, so think about what really caught your attention while you were studying the Holocaust. Use the media that inspired you while learning about the Holocaust, whether it is photos, videos, audio clips, or anything else. You are the professional, so show the museum how well you can commemorate these lives.
Audience: Your audience will be a panel of committee members from the Holocaust Memorial Museum. Each member will walk around and observe all of the memorials, asking for details and the significance of each piece as they walk around the room. You will want to be ready to explain why you chose each aspect of the memorial. After, the committee members will each select a favorite memorial that they believe best captures the memory of the individual. They will then meet and decide which memorial they would like to feature this year on Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Situation: You will present the memorial you create on a chosen night, with the intention of celebrating the lives of the individuals lost and being featured at the Holocaust Memorial Museum. You will have the opportunity to use all of the resources we have worked with throughout the unit.
Product/Performance: As a historical web designer, you will create an online memorial in honor of the individuals lost during the Holocaust using the program Capzles. Work to build a meaningful memorial that will truly honor those lost. Once you have created this memorial, present and explain it to the museum community members. Show them what as struck you as interesting or particularly difficult. They will then choose the on-line memorial to be featured at the Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Standards: Students will meet the Maine Learning Results from each subject area.
